Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I have a monitored alarm system instead of a non-monitored one?
A monitored system provides an extra layer of security and peace of mind. If there is a break-in, fire, flood, or other emergency, our 24/7 ULC-certified monitoring station is alerted and can:

  • Notify you within minutes
  • Confirm authorized/unauthorized access
  • Dispatch emergency services (police, fire, etc.) if needed

A non-monitored system is simply a deterrent (like a barking dog) and may not alert anyone beyond your own household. Often, sirens aren’t loud enough to even alert your neighbours.

What happens if I accidentally set off my alarm?
You’ll have approximately 30 seconds to disarm your system. The monitoring station will receive a cancel code

  • You can call our monitoring station, verify your identity and password, and report a false alarm.
  • If you don’t call, an operator will contact you to confirm your identity and ask if all is ok.
  • If no one responds, emergency services may be dispatched depending on your settings.
What if I’m not home and the alarm goes off?
  • We will call your primary contact number.
  • If you confirm unauthorized entry, we can dispatch police or a guard service.
  • If no authorized person can be reached, the siren will sound for 4 minutes, then stop and reset.
  • If the issue persists (e.g. a motion detector alarm), it will re-trigger every 4 minutes until resolved.
I have pets. Won’t they set off motion detectors?

Most motion detectors we use have Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors. These detect heat energy from movement and can be calibrated for pet immunity, so they won’t go off for your cat or dog.

What devices can be monitored besides the alarm system?

You can add a wide variety of monitored devices, including:

  • Flood sensors
  • Smoke detectors
  • Motion detectors
  • Glass break sensors
  • Sump pumps
  • Heat detectors
  • Hi/Low temperature sensors
  • Water shut-off systems
  • Valuable asset monitoring (e.g. artwork)
What happens if there is a power outage?

Your system includes a backup battery which keeps your system running during a power failure.

  • When power returns, the system reverts to main power.
  • Batteries come in different sizes and should be replaced every 3–5 years.
Do I need an alarm permit?

Yes. According to RDCO bylaw, a false alarm permit is required.

  • In 2023, 72% of all alarm calls to the RCMP were false alarms, wasting emergency resources.
  • A permit is valid for 2 years.
  • With a permit, the first false alarm no charge in a 12 month period. Without it, you may be fined:
    $100 for residential
    $200 for commercial

How much does professional monitoring cost?

Monitoring starts as low as $1/day or $29/month.

  • We offer multiple options: Landline, IP, Cellular, or Dual Path (Cell + IP)
  • Optional features like security app subscription, video monitoring, video storage, and reporting will incur additional charges.
Do I need a landline to monitor my system?
No. Most clients use IP or cellular communication—or both—for secure and reliable alarm monitoring. Cancel your landline with an upgraded security system by Wiltech Security Systems and save money!
Can I switch from my current provider to Wiltech Security without replacing everything?
Absolutely. In most cases, we may need to replace your communicator and possibly make minor equipment adjustments. We’re happy to help you make the switch.
Do I get a discount on my home insurance with a monitored system?

Yes. Most insurers offer discounts depending on your system and can reduce your insurance premiums. Monitored services might include:
